Anatomy Deep Lab · Architecture

Nodes, meristems, and branching shape the plant you see.

Follow how the shoot apex produces new tissues, how nodes position leaves and axillary buds, and how light, hormones, genetics, and training change branch competition. Architecture should be measured over time rather than judged from a single snapshot.

Structure

Node + internode

Nodes organize leaves, branches, and axillary buds. Internodes separate successive nodes and help define overall plant architecture.

Development

Shoot apical meristem

The shoot apex continuously generates new shoot tissues. Removing or damaging it can change dominance relationships and redistribute growth toward lateral buds.

Observation

What to record

  • Node number and internode length at repeatable positions.
  • Branch symmetry, vigor, angle, and axillary bud activity.
  • Canopy PPFD distribution and recent pruning or training.
  • Whether architecture is consistent across comparable plants.
Interpretation

Avoid single-cause conclusions

Internode length and branch vigor are context-dependent. Genetics, light distribution, developmental stage, and recent manipulation can all produce similar architecture.

Evidence boundary: one unusual node does not establish a diagnosis.
