Core science

Whiteflies are documented pests of greenhouse-grown hemp and cannabis. Adults are small, bright white-winged insects typically found on leaf undersides, while eggs and flat, pale immature stages remain attached to leaves and can be overlooked without close inspection.

Both adults and nymphs feed from phloem and produce honeydew. Heavy infestations can be associated with yellowing, leaf decline, sticky foliage, and sooty mold, but these symptoms overlap with aphids and other stressors and should not substitute for direct organism evidence.

Bemisia tabaci has direct Cannabis disease relevance because controlled research demonstrated transmission of lettuce chlorosis virus to cannabis. Whitefly presence alone does not establish virus infection; compatible symptoms and plant diagnostics remain necessary.

Species-level whitefly identification can require immature-stage or molecular characters because visually similar whitefly taxa occur in greenhouse systems. A generic whitefly diagnosis is preferable to an unsupported Bemisia species assignment.

Extension sources report greenhouse hemp scouting thresholds in some regional programs, but threshold transfer across cultivars, markets, crop stages, and jurisdictions is not validated universally. This lesson therefore treats abundance and crop response as recorded decision inputs rather than one fixed cannabis threshold.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Inspect lower-leaf undersides for eggs and immature stages as well as adults; sticky cards are useful for adult detection but do not measure attached nymph density directly.
  • Differentiate whitefly adults from pale aphid exuviae and other small flying insects by direct observation and leaf-stage evidence.
  • When interveinal chlorosis or virus-like symptoms occur, separate whitefly identification from disease confirmation and use appropriate plant diagnostics.
  • Any control action must follow current crop labels, local law, worker-safety requirements, residue limits, and compatibility with beneficial organisms.

Adult activity

Record adults per sticky card interval or per standardized leaf-disturbance inspection and map hotspot location.

Immature stages

Record eggs, crawlers, settled nymphs, and puparia per defined leaf area or leaf sample.

Leaf signs

Record honeydew, sooty mold, yellowing, leaf drop, underside colony distribution, and matched unaffected leaves.

Species confidence

Record whether identification is family-level, whitefly species complex, or laboratory-confirmed species.

Disease evidence

Record virus-like symptoms and laboratory plant-test results independently of whitefly counts.

Evidence limits

Whiteflies are documented on greenhouse hemp and cannabis, and Bemisia tabaci has experimentally transmitted lettuce chlorosis virus to cannabis. However, whitefly species composition, cultivar susceptibility, disease prevalence, and economic thresholds vary among systems. Regional extension thresholds should not be presented as universal cannabis action levels.
