Core science
Not every aphid found on Cannabis is Phorodon cannabis. Green peach aphid, cotton aphid, rice root aphid, and other aphids have been reported in Cannabis-associated systems, but their biology, preferred tissues, and ability to sustain colonies differ.
A recent industrial-hemp study compared P. cannabis, Myzus persicae, and Aphis gossypii and found strong host suitability for cannabis aphid while the tested hemp cultivar did not support sustained population growth of cotton aphid or green peach aphid. This is cultivar- and study-specific evidence, not proof that those species can never occur or transmit virus in other contexts.
Species identification should combine morphology, feeding location, colony persistence, and host-response evidence. Winged aphids can land on nonpreferred hosts and probe them, so one alate or a few transient individuals do not establish that the crop supports a reproducing infestation.
Root-associated aphids require a different sampling zone than canopy aphids. Rice root aphid has been reported from commercial cannabis systems and can be parasitized by Aphelinus varipes, demonstrating that belowground aphid observations should not be forced into a canopy-aphid diagnosis.
Virus-vector importance and crop-colonization ability are separate biological properties. An aphid that does not form dense colonies can still be epidemiologically relevant for some nonpersistent viruses if compatible transmission biology exists.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Collect representative specimens instead of assuming every aphid is cannabis aphid, especially when colony color, location, host response, or growth pattern differs from the expected profile.
- Inspect both canopy and root-zone interfaces when symptoms or sticky-card captures are not explained by visible leaf colonies.
- Record whether aphids are reproducing over repeated observations; transient winged arrivals and expanding nymph-rich colonies have different biological meaning.
- Treat virus diagnosis, pest identification, and management authorization as separate decisions.

Record specimen morphology, magnification, identifier confidence, and whether molecular or specialist confirmation was used.
Colony persistence
Record nymph production, repeated counts, winged/wingless forms, and whether abundance increases on the crop over time.
Feeding zone
Record leaf, stem, flower, crown, root, media interface, or nearby weed/alternate-host location.
Host-response context
Record honeydew, sooty mold, yellowing, wilting, root decline, and matched unaffected plants.
Virus context
Record compatible disease symptoms and diagnostic test results separately from aphid presence.

Evidence limits
The diversity of aphids encountered in cannabis systems is broader than the set of species with well-characterized Cannabis-specific life tables. Host suitability can vary by cultivar and environment, so results from one hemp genotype should not be universalized. Species-level identification may require expert morphology or molecular confirmation.
