Core science
IPM is a process rather than a single control method. EPA describes a four-part decision sequence built around action thresholds, monitoring and accurate identification, prevention, and control selected for effectiveness and risk.
Prevention is the first line of defense because keeping pests and pathogens out, removing reservoirs, using clean plant material, and reducing favorable conditions can prevent a population or epidemic from becoming established.
Monitoring and identification come before intervention because not every organism is harmful and because injury, symptoms, pest abundance, crop stage, beneficial organisms, and environmental context affect the appropriate response.
A threshold is a decision aid, not a universal Cannabis number. Hemp extension literature notes that economic thresholds remain poorly established for several hemp pests, so records, crop value, life stage, injury, vector risk, and local evidence must be considered instead of inventing a single trigger.
Control selection remains integrated with prevention and monitoring. Cultural, physical, mechanical, biological, and lawful pesticide options can be combined, but pesticide use does not define IPM and research efficacy does not create legal authorization.

- Build crop protection around preventing introductions and establishment rather than waiting for visible damage.
- Use repeatable scouting and diagnostic escalation so treatment decisions are linked to identified problems and recorded evidence.
- Choose the narrowest effective and lawful response that fits pest identity, crop stage, beneficial-organism compatibility, and current label requirements.
- Re-scout after intervention and record whether abundance, injury, symptoms, or disease-risk indicators actually changed.

Document the threshold or contextual reason for action, including uncertainty when no validated Cannabis-specific economic threshold exists.
Control selection
Record preventive, cultural, physical, biological, or pesticide action and why it was selected; for regulated products preserve the current label and jurisdictional authorization.
Verification
Record follow-up timing, comparable monitoring results, unintended effects, and whether escalation, continuation, or closure is justified.
