Flower & Inflorescence Anatomy

Inspect pistillate and staminate flower structures, bracts, stigmas, anthers, inflorescence organization, glandular surfaces, and developmental change through reproductive growth.

Function

What the system does

  • Produces reproductive organs
  • Receives or releases pollen
  • Supports fertilization and seed formation
  • Creates specialized tissues rich in glandular trichomes
Observation

What to record

  • Flower type and distribution
  • Stigma condition
  • Bract development
  • Anther or pollen-sac presence
  • Tissue damage, mold risk, and maturation patterns
Interactions

Keep connected causes in view

  • Photoperiodic signaling controls developmental transition
  • Pollination changes reproductive priorities
  • Humidity and airflow affect dense floral tissues
  • Genotype shapes inflorescence architecture
Measurements

Attach numbers to the observation

  • Developmental day or stage
  • Photoperiod
  • Flower-zone temperature
  • Flower-zone RH
  • Airflow context
  • Pollination evidence
  • Tissue damage or mold observations
Evidence questions

Test the explanation

  • Which structure is actually being observed: bract, stigma, sugar leaf, anther or other tissue?
  • Is the change developmental, pollination-related, environmental or pathological?
  • Are dense floral microclimates different from room-average conditions?
Interpretation cautions

Avoid single-symptom conclusions

  • Stigma color alone is not a complete maturity metric
  • Dense flowers create microclimates
  • Always distinguish flower anatomy from surrounding leaf tissue

Evidence boundary: observation narrows plausible explanations; it does not prove a cause by itself. Use measurements, time course, comparisons, and appropriate testing before acting.
