Terms to know

secondary indicator
An organism or sign whose presence points to another condition, such as ants attracted to aphid honeydew, without itself proving the underlying diagnosis.
trophobiosis
A mutualistic interaction in which ants obtain honeydew from sap-feeding insects and may protect or tend those insects.
parasitoid wasp
A wasp whose immature stage develops in or on another arthropod and ultimately kills the host; many are important natural enemies of aphids, whiteflies, caterpillars, and other pests.

Core science

Ants and wasps are ecologically diverse, so their presence in a hemp or cannabis crop does not have one meaning. Some ants may directly damage plant crowns or seeds, some are attracted to honeydew-producing pests, and many wasps are predators or parasitoids that contribute to biological control.

Pavement ants have been documented damaging hemp at the crown in Utah extension observations. This is species- and context-specific evidence and should not be generalized to every ant found on a plant.

Aphid honeydew can attract ants. In that situation, ant activity may function as an indirect scouting clue for a sap-feeding colony. The correct follow-up is to inspect for aphids, whiteflies, scales, or other honeydew producers rather than calling the ants the primary pest by default.

Tiny parasitoid wasps are commonly captured on sticky cards and can be mistaken for small pest flies. Hemp aphid guidance specifically warns that winged aphids can be confused with fungus gnats and tiny aphid parasitoid wasps without magnification and experience.

Wasps also include important predators. Their occurrence can indicate active natural-enemy communities, but beneficial status should be based on identification and observed behavior rather than the word ‘wasp’ alone.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • When ants are abundant, inspect plants for honeydew, aphids, whiteflies, scales, crown injury, nesting sites, and food sources before deciding whether ants are a pest or an indicator.
  • Preserve small wasp specimens from sticky cards or plants when identification matters so parasitoids are not accidentally counted as pests.
  • Record natural-enemy activity in the same scouting system as pest counts because predators and parasitoids affect population trend and action decisions.
  • Separate nuisance, beneficial, indicator, and damaging roles; regulated control decisions should be based on the confirmed role and current lawful label context.

Organism identity

Record ant/wasp taxon when possible, morphology, magnification, behavior, and identification confidence.

Associated pests

Record honeydew, aphids, whiteflies, scales, caterpillars, parasitoid mummies, prey capture, and other associations.

Plant injury

Record direct crown, root, leaf, seed, or flower injury separately from mere organism presence.

Nest or activity location

Map soil/media nests, benches, field edges, plant crowns, sticky-card captures, and repeated movement pathways.

Ecological role

Classify as confirmed pest, beneficial predator/parasitoid, scavenger, indirect indicator, incidental, or unresolved.

Evidence limits

Hemp-specific evidence exists for pavement-ant injury and for aphid-associated natural enemies, but the broader ecological roles of ants and wasps vary by species and system. General natural-enemy biology is appropriate for interpretation while species-level crop significance requires direct identification and observation.
