Leaf Anatomy

Leaf anatomy is the baseline reference for visual diagnosis. Learn the structures before interpreting color, curl, spots, or damage.

Visual reference slot

Needed asset: Healthy Fan Leaf Reference Card with top and underside views, blade, petiole, midrib, veins, leaflet tips, serrations, and inspection zones.

Field checklist

  • Identify blade, petiole, midrib, veins, serrated margins, top, and underside.
  • Check whether the symptom follows veins, edges, tips, or random patches.
  • Inspect underside and nodes before assuming nutrient cause.

Measurements to pair

  • Plant stage and canopy location.
  • PPFD/DLI, temperature, RH, VPD.
  • pH, EC, irrigation timing, and recent changes.

Common mistakes

  • Calling every yellow leaf a deficiency.
  • Ignoring underside pest signs.
  • Comparing damaged old tissue instead of new growth.
