Pythium and Oomycete Root Rot

Terms to know

oomycete
A fungus-like stramenopile organism with biology distinct from true fungi; several Pythium species are important root pathogens.
Pythium
A genus historically used for many water-associated oomycetes, including species documented to cause Cannabis and hemp root, crown, and damping-off diseases.
damping-off
Rapid collapse or death of seedlings or cuttings associated with infection of roots, hypocotyl, crown, or stem-base tissues.
zoospore
A motile asexual propagule produced by some oomycetes that can move through water films and contribute to dispersal.
root rot
Loss of healthy root structure and function caused by tissue decay; it is a syndrome requiring a causal diagnosis rather than a pathogen name by appearance alone.

Core science

Pythium species are documented Cannabis and hemp pathogens. Cannabis studies have recovered P. myriotylum, P. dissotocum, P. aphanidermatum, P. ultimum, and other Pythium taxa from symptomatic roots and crowns, with disease patterns including browning, water-soaked or necrotic crown tissue, stunting, chlorosis, wilt, collapse, and plant death.

Pythium is an oomycete, not a true fungus. This biological distinction matters for taxonomy, diagnostic interpretation, survival structures, water-associated spread, and the fact that products effective against some true fungi are not automatically effective or appropriate against oomycetes.

Causation has been demonstrated directly in Cannabis for multiple Pythium species. P. ultimum was shown to cause crown rot in greenhouse Cannabis after inoculation and re-isolation, and P. myriotylum has been reported causing crown/root rot in hemp and, in 2026, damping-off and root rot in Cannabis sativa in Florida.

Water movement can be epidemiologically important because oomycete propagules can be associated with irrigation or recirculating systems, but wet roots alone do not prove Pythium. Excessive irrigation, low root-zone oxygen, salinity, heat, physical root damage, Fusarium, and other organisms can produce overlapping decline symptoms.

Species identity and production context matter. A Pythium species detected in water or media does not automatically establish that it caused plant symptoms. Strong diagnosis combines symptomatic tissue, organism identification, epidemiological fit, and, where available, pathogenicity evidence.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Inspect the root system and crown of declining plants and compare them with healthy plants from the same cultivar, propagation cohort, irrigation zone, and substrate lot.
  • When cases cluster along shared irrigation or recirculation pathways, document that pattern and test plant tissue and/or water as appropriate rather than assuming a waterborne outbreak from symptoms alone.
  • Differentiate Pythium-associated disease from Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, abiotic hypoxia, chronic overwatering, salinity injury, nutrient imbalance, and mechanical root damage.
  • Use organism-specific diagnosis and current lawful product labels for any control decision; oomycete biology should not be simplified into a generic ‘fungal root rot’ treatment category.

Measure and record

Root/crown condition

Record root color, firmness, sloughing, crown lesions, water-soaked tissue, stem-base condition, and representative photos.

Plant pattern

Record cultivar, propagation lot, age/stage, incidence, spatial clustering, irrigation zone, substrate/media lot, and collapse timing.

Water context

Record irrigation source, recirculation, reservoir connections, flooding or saturation events, root-zone moisture history, and relevant water-test results.

Diagnostic evidence

Record tissue sampled, culture/microscopy/molecular result, identified oomycete species when available, and diagnostic confidence.

Differential evidence

Record root-zone oxygen/moisture indicators, EC/salinity context, Fusarium testing where relevant, and other plausible abiotic or biological causes.

Claim: Pythium is simply another true fungus.

Evidence limits

Cannabis and hemp reports involve multiple Pythium species, cultivars, climates, substrates, and production systems. Disease-note pathogenicity studies establish causal capability under defined conditions but do not create universal incidence, environmental thresholds, or treatment rules.
