Female cannabis inflorescences are made of many small pistillate flowers associated with bracts and small leaves. Each pistillate flower contains a one-ovule ovary and two elongated stigmatic branches that extend outward. The surrounding bract becomes a prominent resin-bearing tissue and is one of the densest sites of capitate-stalked glandular trichomes.

Cannabis literature and grower language use “bract” and “calyx” inconsistently. This encyclopedia adopts the following controlled convention: calyx means the collective sepal whorl, while the prominent resin-bearing leaf-like structure surrounding the pistillate flower is labeled the bract. That is a declared terminology choice tied to the cited anatomical sources, not a claim that every publication uses the terms identically.

The commercial “bud” is an inflorescence, not a single flower. Its density, branching, bract size, leaf proportion, stigma development, trichome distribution, and maturation pattern vary with genetics and environment. Pollination changes resource allocation toward achene and embryo development.

  • Sample maturity from defined bract locations rather than whichever visible leaf has the most dramatic trichome color. Sugar-leaf glands and bract glands can mature differently.
  • When inspecting for disease, open dense inflorescences carefully. Exterior appearance can hide senescent tissue, moisture pockets, insects, or Botrytis injury.
