Core science
Cannabis is primarily wind-pollinated. Staminate flowers release numerous small pollen grains that can move through air and settle on receptive stigmas. Dispersal is not the same as successful fertilization: pollen must be viable, reach a receptive stigma, hydrate, germinate, and grow a pollen tube to the ovule.
After fertilization, the embryo and seed tissues develop while the ovary matures into the one-seeded fruit unit commonly called a seed. Seed maturation takes time; a darkening exterior alone does not prove complete embryo maturity or high vigor. Parent health, timing, environment, and seed position can influence development and harvest uniformity.
Unplanned pollination changes the production objective. A controlled cannabis study found that fertilization following pollination altered cannabinoid and terpenoid accumulation in the tested genotypes and conditions while resources shifted toward seed development. The magnitude is not universal: genotype, pollination timing, flower position, and production system matter. Controlled breeding therefore requires both a positive identity system for intended parents and a negative contamination-control system for every other pollen source.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Pollen control includes space, timing, airflow, surfaces, clothing, tools, plant movement, and records. Removing a male after visible release does not remove pollen already distributed.
- For controlled pollination, label the treated branch and protect unpollinated controls. Record pollen parent, recipient, date, method, and containment.

Common misconceptions
Correction: Viability, stigma receptivity, environment, and fertilization success all matter.
Correction: Air movement and personnel can distribute pollen beyond the source plant.
Correction: External appearance should be combined with harvest timing and testing.
Evidence limits
Pollen longevity and dispersal depend strongly on moisture, temperature, airflow, and handling. Use measured facility or field controls rather than universal distance claims.
