Male cannabis plants usually form branched inflorescences bearing many small staminate flowers. In the examined botanical descriptions, a typical flower has a five-part greenish perianth surrounding five stamens. These counts describe the common form, not an invariant rule; observed variants should be recorded rather than forced into the diagram. At anthesis, the segments open, filaments extend, and anthers release pollen.
Pollen development begins before visible release. A closed flower cluster can therefore represent a future contamination risk even if no airborne pollen is observed. Timing varies among genotypes and with environment. Male plants can also differ in branching, floral density, release duration, and pollen viability.

- For breeding, record the exact male plant, first anthesis, collection date, environmental conditions, and pollen handling. “The male from the room” is not an adequate parent record.
