Core science
Readiness is not an exact plant age. A transplantable seedling has active new growth, an intact apex, a root system that holds or occupies the propagation unit without being severely bound, manageable water demand, and no unresolved disease or pest issue. The receiving environment must also be prepared.
Transplant changes multiple variables at once: container volume, media chemistry, moisture distribution, root-zone oxygen, light, temperature, humidity, airflow, and sometimes outdoor ultraviolet and wind. Hardening-off reduces the size of that step by gradually increasing exposure while monitoring water balance and injury.
Root disturbance can damage fine absorptive tissue and temporarily alter establishment, but severity depends on plug integrity, method, and recovery conditions. Use an internal transplant procedure: preserve the root ball, match plug and receiving-media contact, avoid unsupported burial of injured stem tissue, and document planting depth, compaction, irrigation, and solution EC. These are project controls, not universal cannabis thresholds.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Prepare and verify the destination before removing seedlings from trays. Match media moisture on both sides of the interface, preserve labels, and record the new container or bed position.
- For outdoor movement, use staged exposure to brighter light, wind, temperature swings, and lower humidity. Pause or step back if leaves scorch, wilt persistently, stems lodge, or growth stops.

Common misconceptions
Correction: Development and root occupation vary with genotype and environment.
Correction: Acclimation should challenge gradually without preventable injury.

Evidence limits
General hardening schedules are starting frameworks. Cannabis response, weather, greenhouse conditions, and receiving systems require local adjustment.
