Core science

Recovery is multidimensional. A plant can regain leaf turgor quickly while stem wounds, vascular disruption, or growth suppression continue for longer, so one visual sign should not define complete recovery.

Training creates a cost that varies with tissue removed or damaged, plant water status, developmental stage, environment, root function, and genotype. Repeating an intervention before measurable recovery can compound that cost.

Useful recovery indicators include restored leaf posture, resumed shoot expansion, stable water uptake, wound closure without expanding necrosis, and recovery of stem support. None of these alone proves that final yield or quality is unaffected.

Progressive wilt above an injury, expanding discoloration, stem collapse, persistent growth arrest, exposed or rotting tissue, and suspected pathogen entry are reasons to stop additional stress and reassess plant health.

Predefined stop criteria reduce confirmation bias. They prevent a grower from continuing a favored training method simply because earlier effort has already been invested.

  • Record plant condition before training so post-treatment changes have a baseline.

Measure and record

Baseline

Record leaf posture, visible vigor, current growth rate or shoot length, irrigation behavior, and any pre-existing injury before treatment.

Early recovery

Check turgor, leaf angle, branch position, and visible injury at consistent intervals after treatment.

Growth resumption

Measure new shoot or leaf expansion from a marked reference point rather than relying only on appearance.

Wound status

Record closure, swelling, cracking, discoloration, necrosis, odor, structural weakness, and whether support remains necessary.

Stop criteria

Predetermine conditions such as persistent wilt, progressive necrosis, split stems, continued collapse, stalled growth, or suspected infection that end or postpone further training.
