Rhizosphere

The rhizosphere is the active zone around roots where moisture, oxygen, minerals, microbes, organic compounds, and root exudates interact. It helps explain why media biology and root conditions affect above-ground symptoms.

Root AnatomyNutrient UptakeDownloads

What to learn

  • Roots release exudates that influence microbial activity.
  • Microbes can help cycle nutrients, but they still need moisture and oxygen balance.
  • Media structure affects air, water, and contact with roots.
  • Overly wet or compacted zones can shift biology toward stress conditions.
  • Healthy biology does not replace pH, EC, and irrigation control.

Production visual v1: root-zone biology depends on roots, moisture, oxygen, microbes, media structure, and measurement context.

Measurements to pair

Substrate moisture, dryback rate, root-zone temperature, pH, EC, media type, amendment history, and irrigation frequency.

Grow Doc prompt

I am evaluating the rhizosphere. Media is [soil/coco/peat/mix], moisture pattern is [x], pH is [x], EC is [x], and symptoms are [x]. Help identify whether media biology or root-zone conditions may be involved.
