Dryback

Dryback is the wet-to-dry movement of the root zone between irrigations. It affects oxygen, water availability, nutrient concentration, root behavior, and leaf posture.

What to learn

  • Container weight is one of the simplest dryback indicators.
  • Dryback differs by media, pot size, root mass, temperature, and plant demand.
  • Too little dryback can reduce oxygen and encourage root stress.
  • Too much dryback can cause wilt, uptake interruption, and EC concentration.
  • Consistency matters more than guessing by schedule alone.
Rule: watering decisions need root-zone context, not only a calendar.

Measurements to pair

Container weight, substrate moisture, time since irrigation, runoff EC, feed EC, VPD, canopy size, root mass, and media type.
