Terms to know
- contact time
- The period a disinfectant must remain in effective contact with the surface or item under the conditions specified by the product label or validated procedure.
- surface preparation
- Removal of debris, organic matter, standing media, sap, soil, biofilm, or other barriers and any required pre-rinse or drying step before disinfection.
- wet time
- The time a surface remains adequately wetted with the working solution when wet contact is required for efficacy.
- working solution
- The prepared disinfectant formulation used at the concentration and conditions required by the current label or validated SOP.
- surface compatibility
- Whether the disinfectant/process can be used without unacceptable corrosion, degradation, phytotoxic residue, or equipment damage on the material being treated.
Core science
Disinfectant efficacy is conditional. Product chemistry, concentration, target organism, organic load, surface material, temperature, solution age, and contact time can all influence whether an inactivation claim applies.
Greenhouse guidance emphasizes removing soil and plant debris before disinfection because organic material can neutralize or shield against several commonly used disinfectants.
A surface that dries before the required wet/contact interval may not have received the process described by the label or SOP. Conversely, extending exposure or concentration beyond a label is not automatically safer, more effective, or legally permitted.
Porous or damaged surfaces may retain debris and microorganisms and may not support the same contact conditions as smooth nonporous surfaces. Surface selection and maintenance are therefore part of sanitation design.
Pathogen-specific evidence matters. A process validated against one organism or surrogate should not automatically be described as eliminating every Cannabis pathogen, viroid, bacterium, fungus, oomycete, or arthropod stage.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Write sanitation SOPs around the exact surface, contamination type, product/process, current label, preparation step, required contact condition, rinse/dry requirement, and equipment compatibility.
- Use timers, logs, or process controls where contact time is critical instead of relying on memory or a quick spray-and-wipe habit.
- Discard or repair damaged reusable containers, benches, and tools when cracks, corrosion, roughness, or inaccessible joints prevent adequate cleaning and contact.
- For pathogen incidents, document the sanitation process actually performed rather than recording only a product brand or saying an area was sanitized.

Record debris removal, cleaning, rinse/dry steps, and surface condition before disinfectant application.
Product/process identity
Record current label/SOP reference, formulation or process, preparation date/time when relevant, and approved target surface.
Contact condition
Record required wet/contact time or physical-process condition and how completion was verified.
Compatibility
Record corrosion, residue, phytotoxicity, material damage, or other compatibility observations and corrective action.
Exception/failure
Record premature drying, incorrect preparation, expired/aged solution, visible residual debris, missed surfaces, or other deviations requiring reprocessing.
