- cleaning
- Physical removal of soil, media, sap, plant debris, algae, biofilm, dust, and other contamination from a surface.
- disinfection
- A process intended to inactivate specified microorganisms on an inanimate surface under defined conditions after adequate preparation.
- sanitation
- A broader set of practices used to reduce pest and pathogen contamination, which can include cleaning, disinfection, waste removal, drying, and workflow controls.
- organic matter
- Plant, soil, media, sap, or other carbon-containing debris that can physically shield microbes or consume/inactivate some disinfectants.
- sterilization
- A much stricter process intended to eliminate all viable microorganisms; routine greenhouse cleaning or disinfection should not be called sterilization without a validated sterilizing process.
Core science
Cleaning and disinfection solve different problems. Cleaning removes material from a surface; disinfection attempts to inactivate susceptible microorganisms that remain under the conditions supported by the procedure or product label.
Greenhouse extension guidance consistently places cleaning before disinfection because residual soil, media, plant debris, sap, algae, and other organic matter can shield organisms or reduce the effectiveness of several disinfectants.
A visibly clean surface is not necessarily microbiologically clean, while a disinfectant applied to a visibly dirty surface has not necessarily reached or inactivated the target organism.
Surface material matters. Porous, cracked, rough, absorbent, or complex equipment can be harder to clean and disinfect than intact nonporous surfaces and may require a different validated process or replacement.
The words clean, sanitized, disinfected, and sterile should not be used interchangeably in records. The process actually completed and its verification should be documented.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Build sanitation SOPs as explicit sequences: remove debris, clean, rinse/dry where required, apply the validated disinfection step when indicated, meet the required contact condition, and store the item to prevent recontamination.
- Prioritize crop-contact and propagation surfaces where sap, roots, media, water, and repeated handling create plausible transfer pathways.
- Replace or redesign surfaces that cannot be adequately cleaned rather than compensating indefinitely with more chemical product.
- Use current product labels and facility safety procedures for disinfectants; do not infer legal use, concentration, compatibility, or efficacy from a research paper alone.
Measure and record
Contamination type
Record visible soil, media, sap, plant debris, algae, biofilm, or other residue and the surface/material involved.
Cleaning method
Record physical removal method, detergent or cleaning agent when used, rinse requirements, and completion status.
Disinfection method
Record the validated SOP/product, target surface, label reference, preparation, contact condition, and compatibility constraints.
Status language
Record whether an item is dirty, cleaned, disinfected, or otherwise processed; reserve sterile for a validated sterilization method.
Verification
Record inspection or process checks and any failure that requires recleaning, reprocessing, repair, or replacement.

Evidence limits
The cleaning-before-disinfection principle is well supported in greenhouse sanitation, but exact microbial inactivation depends on the organism, surface, organic load, product formulation, concentration, temperature, contact time, and label directions. This lesson therefore teaches process logic rather than a universal chemical recipe.
