Core science

Vegetative propagation creates a direct biological link between Cannabis mother plants and daughter cuttings. Pathogens present in mother stock can therefore enter propagation cohorts even when the source plant has mild or no visible symptoms.

Cannabis studies and production observations have demonstrated spread of Fusarium from stock plants through cuttings into vegetatively propagated plants. HLVd has likewise been detected in asymptomatic stock plants and rooted cuttings, establishing clonal propagation as an important pathway for pathogen movement.

HLVd is mechanically transmissible in infectious sap. Controlled stem inoculation produces systemic infection, and the viroid can remain detectable for days in crushed leaf extracts and for weeks in dried infected plant material. These findings support concern about sap-contaminated handling, but contamination of a tool surface is not identical to proven transmission into every contacted plant.

Pruning, taking cuttings, defoliation, training, harvesting, and other repeated handling create wounds and opportunities for sap transfer. Fungal and bacterial pathogens can also move on contaminated tools, gloves, hands, debris, or equipment depending on pathogen survival and entry biology.

Transmission should be reconstructed from evidence: pathogen-positive source material, plausible contact timing, recipient exposure, compatible incubation, and subsequent detection. A shared tool or worker is a risk link, not automatic proof of the exact transmission event.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Keep mother/clone relationships traceable so positive stock plants can be linked to downstream cohorts without automatically classifying every daughter plant as infected.
  • Organize work to reduce movement from suspect or positive areas into pathogen-screened stock and record tool/equipment movement when an outbreak investigation is active.
  • Treat pruning and propagation equipment as potential transmission surfaces and use only validated, lawful sanitation procedures compatible with the equipment, pathogen, and facility safety requirements.
  • When a transmission route is suspected, compare exposed and unexposed plants and use laboratory results plus timing rather than relying on contact history alone.

Measure and record

Propagation lineage

Record mother ID, cutting date, clone batch, rooting location, destination, and pathogen-test status for source and daughter material.

Handling events

Record pruning, cutting, training, defoliation, harvest, or other high-contact events and the equipment/work group involved when relevant to an investigation.

Tool movement

Document movement between rooms, lots, or suspect/clean zones and the sanitation procedure used; avoid claiming sterilization unless the process is validated as such.

Transmission evidence

Record source positivity, recipient exposure date, recipient testing, symptom onset, and alternative pathways.

Confidence

Classify the route as demonstrated, strongly supported, plausible, weakly supported, or excluded based on the available evidence.

Evidence limits

Direct Cannabis evidence is strong for clonal spread of important pathogens such as Fusarium and HLVd and for mechanical infectivity of HLVd sap. Exact fomite survival, transfer efficiency, infectious dose, and sanitation efficacy vary by pathogen, material, surface, product, and contact conditions.
