Core science

Cannabis bears glandular and nonglandular trichomes. Glandular categories commonly include bulbous, capitate-sessile, and capitate-stalked forms. Their abundance and proportions change with organ, developmental stage, and genotype. Capitate-stalked trichomes become especially prominent on female floral bracts and nearby small leaves.

The glandular head contains secretory disk cells beneath a storage cavity where cannabinoid-rich resin and volatile compounds accumulate. The stalk elevates the head above the epidermis. These structures are fragile: abrasion, compression, excessive handling, heat, oxidation, and time can change appearance or material recovery.

Classification is not always a set of perfectly separate boxes. Research shows developmental and morphological transitions, and apparent size depends on magnification, lighting, focus, sample orientation, and plant age. Sampling only the most exposed top leaf produces a biased picture of the inflorescence.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • For observation, define tissue type, flower position, side of the plant, magnification, illumination, and image method. Compare bract with bract, not bract with sugar leaf.
  • Trichome color is a field observation, not a direct cannabinoid assay. Combine it with development, cultivar history, flower condition, production goal, and laboratory data when available.

Common misconceptions

Claim: Every plant hair produces cannabinoids
Correction: Nonglandular trichomes lack the characteristic secretory head.
Claim: All trichomes mature at the same rate
Correction: Tissue, position, age, and genotype change development.
Claim: Amber percentage directly equals THC or sedation
Correction: Color is subjective and does not directly quantify chemistry or effect.

Evidence limits

Field microscopes cannot replace validated chemical testing. Trichome classifications should follow the source method and acknowledge transitional forms.
