Terms to know
- seed parent
- The plant bearing the ovules and ultimately the harvested seeds; often called the female or maternal parent in a cross.
- pollen parent
- The plant or defined pollen source contributing the male gametes to a cross.
- controlled pollination
- A pollination event in which the intended pollen source and receiving flowers are deliberately defined and protected from unintended pollen as far as practicable.
- cross identifier
- A unique code linking a pollination event to its parent identities, date, plant or branch location, and resulting seed lot.
- parentage verification
- Use of records, genetic markers, or other validated evidence to confirm that offspring arose from the intended parents.
Core science
A cannabis seed carries genetic contributions from both the seed parent and pollen parent. Controlled breeding therefore depends on knowing which pollen source reached which reproductive tissue, not simply on knowing which plants were present in a room or field.
Cannabis produces abundant, mobile pollen and can be highly heterozygous. Unintended pollen can create progeny whose ancestry differs from the breeder’s label, while even correctly made crosses can segregate widely because parent identity does not guarantee uniform offspring phenotype.
Controlled pollination is a chain-of-identity problem: parent selection, pollen collection, receiving-flower identification, exclusion of competing pollen, cross labeling, seed maturation, harvest, cleaning, packaging, and later germination records must all preserve the same cross identifier.
Physical labels and written records are stronger when they are redundant. A branch tag alone can be lost; a notebook entry alone can become ambiguous. Cross IDs should therefore be repeated on plant labels, pollination records, harvested seed containers, and digital records.
When parentage has high scientific or commercial importance, molecular markers can provide an additional verification layer. Genetic confirmation does not replace accurate field records, but it can detect labeling errors or unintended pollen contributions that visual inspection cannot.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Assign the cross identifier before pollen is applied so the pollination event begins with an established record rather than being reconstructed later.
- Keep seed-parent and pollen-parent fields separate; reversing the parent order changes the biological meaning of the cross even when the same two genotypes are involved.
- Preserve the cross identifier when seeds move from the plant to drying, cleaning, counting, storage, germination testing, and progeny evaluation.
- Treat unexpected seed or progeny traits as a reason to audit parentage and records rather than immediately assuming a new mutation.
Measure and record
Cross ID
Use one unique identifier that appears on the plant or branch label, pollination record, harvest container, cleaned seed lot, and later germination/progeny records.
Parent identity
Record seed-parent accession or clone ID and pollen-parent accession or clone ID as separate fields.
Pollination event
Record date, receiving branch or inflorescence, pollen source batch, operator, and any containment method used.
Contamination controls
Record other pollen sources present, isolation conditions, cleaning events, airflow status, and any breach or uncertainty.
Seed-lot continuity
Record harvest date, seed count or weight, cleaning and storage container ID, and any sample removed for germination or parentage testing.

Evidence limits
Controlled pollination can greatly improve parentage confidence, but physical containment cannot prove genetic identity by itself. Cannabis pollen mobility and heterozygosity make documentation especially important. Where exact parentage is critical, validated molecular testing can supplement but not replace chain-of-identity records.
