Core science

Spacing determines how quickly neighboring canopies interact. Wider spacing delays overlap; closer spacing can increase early area occupancy but also increases competition for light, air movement, root-zone resources, and physical access.

Canopy closure is a developmental outcome, not a fixed calendar date. Cultivar architecture, container or root-zone volume, vegetative duration, training, light environment, and plant vigor all influence when the available area becomes occupied.

Increasing plant density can raise yield per unit area up to a system-dependent point even while yield per individual plant falls. These are different metrics and should not be substituted for one another.

As foliage overlap increases, lower and interior leaves generally receive less light and local humidity can remain elevated for longer. Dense closure can therefore change both carbon gain and disease-conducive microclimates.

The useful spacing target is the density that matches the production objective while preserving adequate light distribution, airflow, inspection access, structural support, and root-zone capacity. There is no single ideal spacing for cannabis.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Plan spacing from expected mature canopy width and the intended training system rather than from container diameter alone.
  • Preserve working and scouting access where plant health inspection, irrigation maintenance, or structural support requires it.
  • If closure occurs earlier than planned, measure internal light and airflow before assuming that more foliage per area is beneficial.
  • When comparing densities, report yield per area as well as yield per plant so the interpretation matches the production question.

Record plant count, center-to-center spacing, row spacing where applicable, and total productive floor or ground area.

Canopy footprint

Measure canopy width in consistent directions or estimate mapped ground cover at repeated dates.

Closure date

Define a repeatable criterion for substantial canopy overlap and record when it occurs rather than using a visual impression alone.

Interior conditions

Record light readings, airflow observations, and temperature or relative humidity at representative interior and edge positions when instruments are available.

Outcome normalization

Report final yield by plant and by unit area, using the same harvest and dry-weight method across treatments.
