Core science

Gibberellins regulate seed reserve mobilization, stem and internode elongation, leaf expansion, flowering-related processes, and reproductive development. Active gibberellin signaling promotes degradation of DELLA repressors, releasing growth programs. The outcome depends on which gibberellin is active, where it is produced, tissue sensitivity, and interactions with light and other hormones.

Internode length is not a gibberellin measurement. Spectrum, daily light, temperature, plant density, root restriction, nitrogen, water, genetics, and developmental stage also affect elongation. Compact plants can differ in gibberellin synthesis, deactivation, transport, perception, or completely separate pathways.

Historical and modern cannabis observations link hormone treatments with sex expression and architecture, but chemical response is not a safe shortcut to infer natural sex biology. Concentration, developmental window, genotype, formulation, worker exposure, residues, and legal status all matter.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Track node number and internode length separately. Height gain can come from added nodes, longer internodes, or both.
  • Do not use unregistered growth regulators to control stretch or sex expression. Production actions are governed by labels, worker safety, residue rules, and jurisdiction.

Measure and record

Architecture

Height, node count, individual internode lengths, branch angles, and growth interval.

Development

Age, photoperiod, preflower/flower stage, sex-expression observations, and transition date.

Environment

Day/night and leaf temperature, DLI, spectrum, density, root volume, water, and N status.

Treatment

Regulator identity, concentration, formulation, label/legal status, exposure, and controls.

Outcome

Elongation, flower timing, abnormalities, residues if tested, and follow-up generations where relevant.

Common misconceptions

Claim: Stretch proves excess gibberellin
Correction: Many environmental and genetic factors alter internode length.
Claim: Gibberellins only affect height
Correction: They also participate in germination and reproductive development.
Claim: A sex-expression treatment rewrites genotype
Correction: It alters developmental expression under specific conditions; genetic identity remains a separate question.

Evidence limits

Cannabis hormone-treatment literature spans differing plant types and older methods. Do not translate historical experimental doses into present cultivation instructions.
