Core science

Gross photosynthesis is not normally observed directly by a standard leaf gas-exchange reading. A chamber reports net exchange: CO2 entering through photosynthetic fixation minus CO2 released by mitochondrial respiration and other processes occurring during the measurement. Different methods estimate gross photosynthesis by combining net exchange with modeled or measured respiration.

Scale changes meaning. A sunlit upper leaf can have positive net assimilation while shaded leaves, stems, roots, and developing tissues consume carbohydrates. Over a dark period the crop is a net respiratory carbon source. Over days, carbon is also lost through leaf drop, root turnover, exudates, volatile compounds, pruning, and harvested or discarded tissue.

Dry biomass integrates carbon gain and mineral accumulation over time but does not reveal when or where the gain occurred. Flower yield is further separated from total biomass by allocation. A treatment can raise leaf photosynthesis without raising harvestable yield if leaf area, duration, sink capacity, or respiration changes in the opposite direction.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Label measurements precisely: leaf net assimilation at stated chamber settings, whole-plant dry-mass gain over stated dates, or harvested inflorescence dry mass under a defined trim standard.
  • When comparing treatments, include leaf area and duration. A rate per square meter of leaf and a crop total per square meter of floor are not interchangeable.

Common misconceptions

Claim: Net photosynthesis is gross photosynthesis
Correction: Net exchange already includes simultaneous carbon losses.
Claim: A high leaf rate guarantees high yield
Correction: Leaf area, duration, canopy distribution, respiration, and allocation also determine production.
Claim: Darkness stops plant metabolism
Correction: Respiration and transport continue in darkness.

Evidence limits

Methods for estimating daytime respiration and gross photosynthesis use assumptions that can change results. Avoid comparing values produced by different protocols as if they were identical.
