Core science
Damping-off is a syndrome, not one organism. Cannabis and general seedling literature identify Pythium or related oomycetes, Fusarium species, Rhizoctonia solani, and other organisms as potential causes. Pre-emergence disease appears as seed decay or missing seedlings. Post-emergence disease can produce water-soaked or constricted stem tissue, root discoloration, wilting, lodging, and collapse.
Young seedlings are vulnerable because tissues are tender and reserves are limited. Wet, poorly drained, compacted, contaminated, or slow-growing conditions can favor disease. Temperature effects depend on the pathogen and host; ‘cold and wet’ is a common risk pattern but not a complete rule for every organism.
Prevention uses multiple barriers: traceable vigorous seed, clean trays and tools, appropriate new or treated medium, clean water practices, drainage, noncompacted media, controlled humidity, air movement, prompt emergence, spacing, scouting, and removal of diseased material. A pesticide or biological product is not automatically legal or effective on cannabis; the current label and jurisdiction control its use.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Quarantine affected trays, stop shared drainage or splash pathways, remove diseased units without contacting healthy seedlings, and clean hands, tools, benches, and containers according to the sanitation plan.
- Do not diagnose by collapse alone. Document stem and root lesions, environmental history, distribution pattern, and laboratory results when consequences justify testing.

Number affected and total observed by tray, lot, position, and date.
Symptoms
Pre- or post-emergence, stem constriction, water soaking, root lesions, growth, and images.
Environment
Media moisture, drainage, temperature, humidity, airflow, light, and salinity history.
Pathways
Seed lot, media batch, tray reuse, water source, tools, hands, insects, and shared runoff.
Action
Isolation, removal, sanitation, submitted sample, authorized treatment, and follow-up count.
Common misconceptions
Correction: Multiple fungi and oomycetes can cause the syndrome.
Correction: Anecdotal household treatments do not identify the pathogen or replace prevention.
Correction: Disease control also depends on sanitation, moisture, drainage, seed vigor, and pathogen pressure.
Evidence limits
Visual symptoms rarely identify the causal organism to species. Product use must follow the current cannabis-allowed label and local law; this lesson does not recommend a pesticide.
