Core science

Light is both energy and information. After emergence, adequate light limits excessive hypocotyl elongation and supports cotyledon and true-leaf photosynthesis. The relevant exposure depends on PPFD, photoperiod, spectrum, distance, uniformity, leaf temperature, carbon dioxide, water status, and prior acclimation.

Low-light-acclimated plants can experience photoinhibition when exposure suddenly exceeds their acclimated capacity; this mechanism is established in plant research but has not been reduced to a universal cannabis-seedling threshold. Increase exposure in measured steps while tracking leaf temperature, water status, and response. The rate of acclimation depends on prior light, spectrum, duration, genotype, and environment.

There is no defensible single cannabis seedling PPFD that fits every genotype and system. Use a calibrated meter, map the tray rather than one point, and record photoperiod and leaf temperature. Stretch, bleaching, distortion, stalled expansion, or localized injury are non-diagnostic observations; interpret them only alongside measured light, temperature, water status, nutrition, disease, and genotype.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Begin with uniform, moderate exposure and change one variable at a time. Increase intensity, duration, or outdoor exposure in steps while maintaining water and temperature control.
  • Rotate trays only if rotation is part of the protocol and recorded; otherwise rotation can hide a poor light map. Correct fixture geometry and edge effects instead of relying on memory.

PPFD grid, meter, date, fixture setting, height, and photoperiod.

Previous and new setting, date, reason, and expected response.

Hypocotyl length, leaf angle, color, expansion, and injury.

Temperature

Air and leaf temperature near representative seedlings.

Common misconceptions

Claim: Seedlings need darkness after emergence
Correction: Established emerged tissue needs light for normal development.
Claim: More light always makes stronger seedlings
Correction: Abrupt or excessive exposure can damage unacclimated tissue.
Claim: Fixture percentage is a universal measurement
Correction: Output depends on fixture, distance, optics, and geometry; measure PPFD.

Evidence limits

Cannabis-specific seedling response curves are limited. Use plant response and measurements, and do not borrow mature-flowering targets for newly emerged seedlings.
