Terms to know

air-filled porosity
The fraction of substrate pore volume filled with air at a defined moisture or drainage state.
water-holding capacity
The amount of water a substrate retains under a defined measurement condition; the value is method- and container-dependent.
bulk density
Dry substrate mass per unit bulk volume, including pore space.
hydraulic contact
Physical contact that permits water movement between the rooting medium and cutting base.
saturation
A moisture state in which most or all connected pore space is filled with water.
rooting plug
A discrete propagation substrate unit used to support a cutting during root initiation and early establishment.

Core science

An unrooted cutting needs continuous water contact at the base, but living tissue also needs oxygen. A medium that remains saturated can restrict gas exchange, while a medium that dries or shrinks away from the stem can interrupt hydraulic contact.

Rooting media differ in pore size, water retention, drainage, sterility status, structural stability, and chemistry. In a study of eight high-CBD hemp cultivars, medium had a large effect on rooting and rockwool performed best among the tested treatments. That result is evidence for those cultivars and methods, not proof that rockwool is universally superior.

Container geometry, plug compression, insertion depth, irrigation method, temperature, and rooting density change the actual air-water environment. Media must be evaluated as installed systems.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Standardize media batch, plug preparation, saturation method, drainage, insertion depth, tray position, and irrigation. Avoid comparing hormone treatments across uncontrolled media conditions.

Evidence limits

Media results are genotype- and system-specific. Physical measurements are more transferable than brand claims.
