Night interruption is a dose-and-timing problem, not a binary property of whether a person can see light. Biological effect depends on photon flux, wavelength, duration, position within the night, recurrence, cultivar sensitivity, canopy location, and prior induction.

Sources include door gaps, adjacent rooms, status LEDs, controller screens, dehumidifiers, cameras, emergency lighting, greenhouse twilight, work lights, timer overlap, and stuck spectral channels. Reflections can distribute a small source beyond the obvious line of sight.

Audit with an instrument suitable for very low light and the relevant spectrum; a standard high-range quantum sensor may lack the needed sensitivity. Inspect from crop positions after eyes adapt, test all equipment states, and record duration. Correct the source and verify the repair rather than relying on tape or assumptions.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Repeated interruption can delay induction, create nonuniform transition, promote reversion-like growth, or confound sex-expression diagnosis in sensitive photoperiod genotypes.
  • Emergency and worker-safety systems must not be disabled casually. Lightproofing changes require code, egress, electrical, and operational review.
