Core science

Secondary lighting can redistribute photons toward shaded leaves and inflorescences. Its value depends on whether it replaces top light at equal total photons or simply adds photons. Trials must distinguish redistribution from increased total photon dose and must measure the vertical and directional profile.

A 2025 medicinal-cannabis study reported increased and more uniform yield under tested subcanopy and inter-canopy systems, but the result belongs to its cultivars, architecture, spectra, dose, layout, and economics. It supports the concept; it does not guarantee the same percentage gain in another room.

Fixtures inside the crop introduce electrical equipment near irrigation, workers, leaves, sprays, and debris. They can obstruct scouting, pruning, movement, sanitation, airflow, and emergency access. Surface temperature, listing, ingress protection, cable routing, cleanability, chemical compatibility, and de-energized service procedures are core design criteria.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • The strongest use case is a vertically nonuniform canopy where lower productive tissues remain photon-limited and top intensity cannot rise safely or efficiently.
  • Success should be judged by saleable yield distribution, uniformity, quality, labor, water use, defects, kilowatt-hours, and total system cost—not yield alone.

Photon accounting

Top, middle, and lower maps; band; direction; total DLI; replacement versus addition; and control treatment.

Crop architecture

Cultivar, density, height, leaf area, training, pruning, and productive-zone definition.

Listing, ingress rating, temperature, cleaning, spray restrictions, access, isolation, and inspection.

Outcome

Yield and quality by vertical position, CV, water use, labor, defects, kWh, and economic assumptions.

Common misconceptions

Claim: Under-canopy light always adds a fixed yield percentage
Correction: Response depends on added photons, architecture, genotype, environment, and baseline distribution.
Claim: Lower leaves use any added light efficiently
Correction: Age, health, acclimation, orientation, source direction, and sink demand affect response.
Claim: Only PPFD matters
Correction: Electrical, sanitation, heat, airflow, access, and worker risks can determine whether the system is viable.

Evidence limits

Cannabis evidence is emerging and includes limited facilities and genotypes. Replicated local trials with equal-photon and energy accounting are needed before broad adoption.
