Core science
Capitate-sessile trichomes have a visible glandular head with secretory cells but lack the conspicuous elongated multicellular stalk of mature capitate-stalked trichomes. They occur on cannabis leaves and reproductive tissues, with abundance varying by organ, surface, genotype, and developmental stage.
Direct flower-development studies show that many sessile-appearing glands on young bracts are associated with later stalk formation as the bract matures. In the 2023 Punja study, sessile-capitate trichomes predominated earlier while stalked-capitate forms became more abundant later, supporting a developmental relationship on those floral tissues.
That relationship is not equivalent to saying every sessile gland on every cannabis organ becomes stalked. Developmental fate can differ by tissue, genotype, and gland population, and mature leaves can retain sessile glandular structures.
Capitate-sessile trichomes are metabolically active. Laser-microdissection and spectroscopy have detected major cannabinoids in both capitate-sessile and capitate-stalked trichomes, although abundance, gland size, secretion volume, and chemical profile can differ.
Apparent stalk height can be altered by viewing angle, surface curvature, tissue preparation, collapse, or incomplete resolution. Classification therefore requires calibrated morphology and tissue context rather than a casual visual label.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Preserve separate counts for sessile and stalked glands when comparing developmental stages or treatments.
- Record the organ and surface because a sessile gland on a leaf should not automatically be interpreted using a bract-development sequence.
- Use matched chemistry when testing whether trichome class is associated with metabolite profile; morphology alone does not establish concentration.
- Retain images and calibration so ambiguous sessile-versus-young-stalked classifications can be reviewed.
Measure and record
Sample context
Record plant ID, organ, surface, branch/node or inflorescence position, and developmental date.
Morphology
Record head diameter, stalk/base height where resolved, and the declared threshold or key used for sessile classification.
Density
Count sessile and stalked structures separately per calibrated area and report excluded/ambiguous glands.
Secretory anatomy
When resolution permits, record disk-cell organization, cavity condition, and head integrity without inferring chemistry from morphology alone.
Matched chemistry
Record isolated-fraction or tissue chemistry, analytical method, stage, and denominator when comparing metabolic function.

Evidence limits
The developmental relationship between sessile-appearing and stalked glands is directly supported on maturing cannabis bracts, but it should not be generalized to every gland population or organ. Destructive preparation, surface geometry, and imaging resolution can change apparent stalk morphology.
