Terms to know

Embryo
The young sporophyte contained within the seed.
Cotyledon
An embryonic leaf that stores or transfers reserves and becomes photosynthetic after emergence.
Radicle
The embryonic root that normally emerges first during germination.
Hypocotyl
The embryonic stem region below the cotyledons.
Plumule
The embryonic shoot region containing the shoot apex and earliest leaf primordia.

Core science

The cannabis embryo is a compact plant body prepared to resume growth when water, temperature, oxygen, and viability permit. Radicle emergence marks the first obvious extension of the new root axis.

The hypocotyl elongates during emergence and helps raise the cotyledons. The cotyledons open above the medium and can become photosynthetic while the first true leaves expand.

The shoot apex between the cotyledons produces subsequent leaves and stem nodes. Root injury, hypocotyl constriction, retained coverings, oxygen depletion, salinity, and disease can all interfere with establishment, but they require their own evidence rather than diagnosis from one stalled seedling.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Avoid unnecessary handling of an exposed radicle; long exposed radicles are particularly easy to damage.
  • Score seedling establishment by structure: radicle, hypocotyl, cotyledons, shoot apex, first true leaves, and root-shoot balance.
  • Breaking the surface does not by itself prove a normal seedling.

Radicle emergence

Date/time from start and approximate length when useful.

Hypocotyl condition

Upright, stretched, constricted, discolored, or damaged.

Cotyledons

Opened, green, damaged, retained covering, or abnormal.

True leaves

Date visible and symmetry or distortion.

Root-shoot balance

Normal, weak root, weak shoot, or both abnormal.

Common misconceptions

Claim: The first two round leaves are true leaves.
Correction: They are cotyledons, which have a different developmental origin.
Claim: The emerging radicle should be green.
Correction: It is embryonic root tissue and is typically pale before light exposure.
Claim: A seedling that breaks the surface has passed.
Correction: Normal development requires coordinated roots, hypocotyl, cotyledons, and shoot apex.

Evidence limits

Exact emergence timing depends on seed lot, temperature, moisture, oxygen, and method. The structural sequence is more transferable than a fixed hour count.
