Sudden Post-Spray Speckling & Scorch

Spotting, bleaching, or scorch that appears after a foliar application should be investigated as a possible exposure event before being labeled disease or deficiency. Droplet pattern and timing are especially useful clues.

Pattern questions

  • Did symptoms begin within a plausible interval after a spray or chemical application?
  • Does injury match droplet coverage, treated zones, or exposed leaf surfaces?
  • Were lights, temperature, or humidity unusually intense around application time?
  • Did untreated plants or shielded leaves remain normal?

Plausible cause categories

  • Phytotoxicity
  • Leaf-spot disease
  • High-light or heat injury
  • Mite or thrips feeding
  • Nutrient-related necrosis

Discriminating checks

  • Reconstruct the spray record and tank history
  • Compare treated and untreated tissue
  • Inspect lesions with magnification for pests or fungal structures
  • Track whether spots remain static after the event or continue expanding

Red flags

  • Continuing lesion expansion after the exposure has ended
  • Sporulation or soft decay
  • Confirmed pest population
  • Repeated injury from the same tank or application process
