Root Discoloration & Sloughing
Root color varies with age, substrate, and staining. Loss of fine roots, soft texture, sloughing, poor branching, and declining function are more informative than color alone.
Pattern questions
- Are roots firm or soft?
- Are fine white or light-colored root tips still forming?
- Is the media persistently saturated?
- Are there odors, biofilms, heat, or high EC?
Plausible cause categories
- Normal staining or aging
- Low oxygen
- Root disease
- High salinity
- Temperature injury
- Physical root damage
Discriminating checks
- Inspect texture and fine-root structure
- Measure moisture, EC, pH, and root-zone temperature
- Review irrigation frequency
- Use laboratory diagnosis when pathogen identity matters
Red flags
- Widespread sloughing
- Wilting despite wet media
- Rapid loss of fine roots
- Multiple plants linked through shared water
