Corky Blisters, Bumps & Edema-Like Lesions

Raised blisters or corky bumps can result from edema or intumescence, but similar surface changes may also come from pests, chemical injury, residue, or disease. Texture and environmental history are important discriminators.

Pattern questions

  • Are bumps concentrated on lower leaf surfaces, petioles, or stems?
  • Do fresh lesions begin as translucent or raised blisters and later become corky?
  • Were nights or low-light periods unusually humid with a wet root zone?
  • Are mites, insects, fungal structures, or residue visible under magnification?

Plausible cause categories

  • Edema or intumescence
  • Microscopic pest injury
  • Phytotoxicity or spray residue
  • Leaf-spot or other disease
  • Genetic or developmental texture

Discriminating checks

  • Inspect both leaf surfaces with magnification
  • Review irrigation timing, RH, airflow, and nighttime conditions
  • Track whether new lesions stop forming after moisture and transpiration balance improves
  • Compare multiple plants and cultivars for susceptibility

Red flags

  • Moving pests or eggs present
  • Lesions rapidly expanding or crossing into stems
  • Sporulation or soft tissue decay
  • Whole-crop progression independent of environmental changes
