Septoria Leaf Spot

Septoria species are documented causes of leaf spot disease on Cannabis sativa. Because foliar lesions overlap with spray injury, nutrient-related necrosis, and other pathogens, lesion appearance should be treated as a starting point for diagnosis rather than a species identification.

What to look for

  • Discrete tan, brown, or necrotic leaf spots that enlarge or increase in number over time
  • Lesions that may develop darker margins or small fungal fruiting structures visible with magnification
  • Disease progression that is more consistent with repeated infection than a one-time injury event
  • Outdoor or protected-crop conditions that support extended leaf wetness or splash dispersal

Important look-alikes

  • Other fungal or bacterial leaf spots
  • Foliar spray or phytotoxicity injury
  • Localized salt or nutrient-related necrosis
  • Mechanical injury and pest feeding scars

How to confirm

  • Inspect both leaf surfaces and lesion structures with magnification
  • Record lesion progression and recent wetting or splash events
  • Compare new lesions with the timing of sprays and environmental events
  • Use laboratory identification when species-level confirmation affects management or reporting

Management principles

  • Reduce avoidable leaf wetness and contaminated splash where practical
  • Remove heavily affected tissue in a way that limits movement of contaminated debris
  • Improve sanitation and airflow while preserving appropriate crop conditions
  • Use confirmed diagnosis rather than treating every circular lesion as Septoria

Prevention

  • Inspect incoming and nearby plant material for active leaf spots
  • Keep irrigation and handling practices from repeatedly wetting foliage where avoidable
  • Remove diseased debris from production areas
  • Keep records linking symptom onset to weather, irrigation, and crop movement
