Neofusicoccum Dieback & Stem Canker

Neofusicoccum parvum has been confirmed as a pathogen of Cannabis sativa and can be associated with stem lesions and terminal dieback. Dieback is not specific to this fungus, so diagnosis should combine stem inspection, crop history, and laboratory confirmation.

What to look for

  • Progressive terminal or branch dieback that does not match simple water stress
  • Localized stem lesions, cankers, or discolored tissue associated with declining shoots
  • Symptoms following wounds, pruning, environmental stress, or movement of infected material
  • Uneven branch decline while other portions of the plant initially remain functional

Important look-alikes

  • Fusarium-associated vascular or crown disease
  • Mechanical stem injury or girdling
  • Severe root-zone stress causing secondary shoot dieback
  • Other fungal canker and dieback pathogens

How to confirm

  • Inspect the transition between healthy and declining stem tissue
  • Photograph and sample the advancing lesion margin rather than only dead tissue
  • Review pruning, sanitation, and plant-movement history
  • Use a plant diagnostic laboratory for organism identification when confirmation matters

  • Separate suspect material from clean propagation stock
  • Remove affected tissue or plants where appropriate without spreading contaminated debris
  • Sanitize cutting tools and work surfaces between plant groups
