High EC & Salt Stress

Excess dissolved salts increase the osmotic difficulty of water uptake and can accompany tip burn, marginal necrosis, slowed growth, or root injury. Symptoms are not specific, so electrical conductivity should be measured rather than inferred from leaf appearance.

What to look for

  • Leaf-tip or marginal necrosis developing across multiple leaves
  • Slowed growth or reduced water uptake despite adequate bulk moisture
  • Root-zone EC rising above the recent input and crop baseline
  • Symptoms that follow stronger feed, insufficient leaching, or concentration during rapid dryback

Important look-alikes

  • Drought stress
  • Nutrient imbalance
  • Heat or low-humidity injury
  • Root disease

How to confirm

  • Measure input and root-zone EC using the same documented method
  • Review feed concentration, irrigation volume, runoff, and recent dryback
  • Inspect roots for secondary injury
  • Compare affected zones with plants receiving the same formula but different irrigation distribution

Management principles

  • Correct the salt accumulation process rather than adding more fertilizer to burned tissue
  • Adjust feed strength or irrigation strategy using measured trends rather than a single visual symptom
  • Avoid abrupt overcorrection when plants are already root-stressed
  • Track new growth after root-zone conditions normalize

Prevention

  • Record input and root-zone EC consistently
  • Calibrate conductivity meters
  • Verify irrigation uniformity
  • Account for source-water EC when evaluating total dissolved-salt load
