Herbicide Drift & Growth-Regulator Injury

Off-target herbicide exposure can produce distorted, narrowed, cupped, twisted, stunted, bleached, or necrotic growth depending on the active ingredient and exposure. New growth may be especially informative, but visual symptoms alone cannot identify a specific herbicide.

What to look for

  • Abnormal twisting, cupping, narrowing, or strapping of new growth
  • A spatial gradient toward an intake, field edge, neighboring treatment area, or contaminated tool path
  • Multiple plant species showing injury in the same exposure zone
  • Symptoms beginning days after a plausible drift, volatilization, carryover, or equipment-contamination event

Important look-alikes

  • Broad or russet mite injury
  • Virus or viroid-associated distortion
  • Micronutrient or root-zone chemistry problems
  • Other spray phytotoxicity

How to confirm

  • Map affected plants and species against the plausible exposure direction
  • Review nearby applications, ventilation intake history, compost or media inputs, and sprayer history
  • Inspect growing tips under magnification for microscopic pests
  • Use laboratory residue analysis only when practical and decision-relevant

Management principles

  • Prevent further exposure and separate contaminated equipment or inputs
  • Avoid adding nutrients or pesticides merely because distorted leaves resemble another disorder
  • Track whether healthy new growth resumes after the exposure ends
  • Replace severely affected material when recovery is not compatible with production goals

Prevention

  • Keep herbicide equipment separate from crop spray equipment
  • Control intake and application timing around nearby herbicide use where relevant
  • Verify compost, manure, mulch, and other inputs when carryover risk is plausible
  • Maintain application and incident records
