Fusarium-Associated Wilt & Crown Disease

Fusarium species can be associated with root, crown, and vascular disease, but wilt and vascular discoloration are not specific enough for diagnosis by appearance alone.

What to look for

  • Progressive wilt not fully explained by short-term water status
  • Root or crown discoloration
  • Stem or vascular discoloration in affected tissue
  • Uneven decline among plants sharing similar above-canopy conditions

Important look-alikes

  • Pythium-associated root disease
  • Severe drought or low root oxygen
  • Mechanical stem injury
  • Other vascular or crown pathogens

How to confirm

  • Inspect roots, crown, and vascular tissue together
  • Submit representative symptomatic tissue to a diagnostic laboratory when confirmation matters
  • Compare irrigation and root-zone records
  • Avoid assigning species from color alone

Management principles

  • Separate diseased material from healthy propagation stock
  • Correct water-management conditions that favor root decline
  • Sanitize tools, surfaces, and reusable containers
  • Use confirmed diagnosis to guide crop-removal and prevention decisions
