Edema & Intumescence
Edema and related intumescence disorders are non-infectious tissue abnormalities that can produce blisters, bumps, or corky areas. They are associated with an imbalance between water uptake and water loss in susceptible plants and can be confused with pests or disease.
What to look for
- Small blisters, bumps, or raised areas, often most noticeable on lower leaf surfaces
- Older lesions becoming tan or corky
- Symptoms developing during humid, low-transpiration periods in susceptible plants
- No moving pest or fungal structure associated with the lesions
Important look-alikes
- Mite or insect injury
- Leaf-spot disease
- Spray residue or phytotoxicity
- Genetic leaf texture
How to confirm
- Inspect both leaf surfaces with magnification
- Review irrigation timing, humidity, airflow, and nighttime conditions
- Track whether new lesions stop forming after environmental balance improves
- Rule out pests and infectious lesions before assigning a physiological disorder
Management principles
- Correct excessive or poorly timed moisture supply when it contributes to the pattern
- Improve the environmental conditions that support appropriate transpiration without creating excessive drying stress
- Avoid unnecessary pesticide treatment when no pest or pathogen is present
- Evaluate new leaves because existing corky lesions will remain
Prevention
- Avoid chronic overwatering
- Maintain appropriate air movement
- Track high-humidity low-transpiration periods
- Learn cultivar or species susceptibility before assuming lesions are infectious
