Environmental and root-zone disorders can mimic pest and disease symptoms. Distribution, timing, progression, and direct evidence help distinguish them.

What to look for

  • Uniform damage across plants exposed to the same environment or irrigation event
  • Sharp boundaries that match light, spray, airflow, or wetting patterns
  • Presence or absence of organisms, sporulation, frass, eggs, webbing, or lesions
  • Whether symptoms continue spreading after the suspected abiotic event has ended

  • Nutrient availability disorders versus root disease
  • Light or heat injury versus mite damage
  • Spray residue versus powdery mildew

How to confirm
