Environmental and root-zone disorders can mimic pest and disease symptoms. Distribution, timing, progression, and direct evidence help distinguish them.
What to look for
- Uniform damage across plants exposed to the same environment or irrigation event
- Sharp boundaries that match light, spray, airflow, or wetting patterns
- Presence or absence of organisms, sporulation, frass, eggs, webbing, or lesions
- Whether symptoms continue spreading after the suspected abiotic event has ended

- Nutrient availability disorders versus root disease
- Light or heat injury versus mite damage
- Spray residue versus powdery mildew
- Mechanical damage versus pathogen lesions
How to confirm
- Map symptoms spatially
