Core science

A detached cutting temporarily loses root access to water and minerals. It must survive from stored resources, photosynthesis, and controlled water loss while new roots develop. Carbohydrate status, nitrogen status, leaf area, stem maturity, and intact meristems can therefore affect survival and rooting.

Cannabis studies show strong cultivar effects and demonstrate that cutting morphology and donor conditions can influence outcomes. An intact apex can contribute endogenous auxin, while greater leaf area can increase potential transpiring surface; the net rooting effect must be validated for the genotype and protocol. Removing too much leaf tissue can also reduce photosynthetic capacity and stored resources.

Cutting length, node number, diameter, and leaf trimming should be treated as protocol variables. A successful specification defines an acceptable range for the actual genotype and system instead of turning one research method into a universal rule.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Harvest uniform cuttings from identified donor zones. Protect them from desiccation, heat, crushing, and long delays. Reject tissue with pests, lesions, weak stems, unresolved nutrient stress, or abnormal growth.

Evidence limits

Direct carbohydrate measurements are uncommon in production. Morphology can act as a proxy, but its relationship to rooting must be validated for each genotype and protocol.
