Core science

Chemotype is observed chemistry, not a name or DNA result. Traditional major classes distinguish THCA-dominant, mixed THCA/CBDA, and CBDA-dominant material; additional CBGA-dominant and other profiles require explicit criteria. Ratio class and absolute concentration answer different questions.

A valid chemotype record names the organ, position, maturity, harvest and drying state, storage, extraction, analytical method, analytes, reporting basis, and laboratory. Acid cannabinoids in living inflorescences must not be silently reported as neutral cannabinoids. Total-potential calculations must state the conversion factor and whether values are mass fraction or concentration.

Genotype strongly influences biosynthetic capacity, but environment, stage, tissue, pollination, health, and measurement affect the chemical phenotype. One result can characterize the tested sample; repeated standardized samples are needed to claim stability.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Use chemistry to confirm breeding populations, select parents, monitor segregation, and verify name claims. Do not substitute a terpene impression or effect report for analytical composition.
  • Compliance classification and breeding chemotype may use different thresholds and analyte rules. Keep the scientific record separate from the jurisdiction’s legal calculation.

Evidence limits

Chemotype boundaries differ among studies and laws. Laboratory bias, sample heterogeneity, decarboxylation, moisture, and developmental timing can change classification near a threshold.
