Core science
Dryback is not one standardized number. It may mean loss of container mass, decline in VWC percentage points, relative decline from post-irrigation peak, or movement in matric potential. A report of ‘20% dryback’ is uninterpretable unless the numerator, denominator, units, sensor, start time, and end time are stated.
The water-content curve reflects plant uptake, surface evaporation, drainage, redistribution, substrate shrinkage, sensor location, and temperature or EC effects on the probe. Early post-irrigation decline may include free drainage, while later decline may more closely reflect crop water use. Treating both segments as one physiological response can mislead.
Larger drybacks may increase air exposure in some substrates but can also increase osmotic concentration, reduce hydraulic conductivity, and produce stress. Very small drybacks can reflect frequent irrigation, low demand, oversized containers, poor drainage, or sensor placement. Neither direction is inherently generative or reproductive.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Define a standard curve: pre-first irrigation, each post-event peak, last irrigation, lights-off, overnight minimum, and next-day pre-irrigation. Use the same sensor positions and label drainage periods separately.
- Change dryback boundaries slowly and validate with root health, substrate EC, leaf temperature, water use, growth, and final quality. Do not copy branded crop-steering percentages into a different substrate and container system.

Common misconceptions
Correction: It may be mass, VWC percentage points, relative VWC, or matric potential.
Correction: Stress effects are intensity-, duration-, stage-, and genotype-dependent.
Correction: Drainage, evaporation, temperature, salinity, and placement also influence it.
Evidence limits
Cannabis research does not validate universal dryback percentages for all media, containers, cultivars, and stages. Use controlled trials and publish the full measurement definition.
