Leaf Curl Pattern Guide

Use this guide to describe leaf posture accurately before diagnosing the cause. Curl direction, location, timing, texture, and environment all matter.

Leaf posture comparison chart

Final artwork should compare tacoing, canoeing, downward clawing, wilted droop, twisting new growth, and cupping with directional labels.

Field checklist

  • Do edges curl upward, downward, inward, or twist?
  • Is curl in the upper canopy, lower canopy, or new growth?
  • Is the plant still turgid, or is it actually wilted?
  • Does curl timing match strong light, dry air, watering, or high EC?
  • Is leaf texture brittle, soft, dark, thin, or otherwise abnormal?
Rule: leaf curl describes a response pattern; it does not identify cause without context.

Grow Doc prompt

I am using the Leaf Curl Pattern Guide. The leaves show [tacoing/clawing/drooping/twisting/cupping], mostly in the [upper/lower/new growth] area. Current PPFD is [x], temperature is [x], RH is [x], VPD is [x], and substrate moisture is [x]. Help narrow likely causes.
