quarantine
Physical and workflow separation of material with unresolved health or identity status from released stock.
chain of custody
A traceable record of who collected, transferred, stored, or handled a sample from collection through testing and decision.
representative sample
A sample selected by a defined plan so the tested material reasonably addresses the population, tissue, organism, and decision of interest.
diagnostic panel
A defined set of assays or target organisms included in a testing program; a panel only supports conclusions about its stated targets and methods.
release
A documented decision that material may leave quarantine or another controlled status under the program’s stated criteria.
false negative
A negative test result obtained when the target is actually present, potentially because of assay performance, sampling, timing, tissue choice, or target distribution.

Core science

Incoming clones can introduce pests, pathogens, viroids, mislabeled genetics, resistant organisms, and unknown chemical residues. Quarantine separates this uncertainty from established mother and production stock.

Testing answers a defined question about the submitted tissue and method. A negative result does not prove permanent freedom from every organism. Uneven pathogen distribution, tissue choice, timing, and sampling design can contribute to false-negative results, so organism-specific laboratory instructions must control sampling.

Identity and health are separate release gates. A clone may match the expected cultivar yet fail health criteria, or test negative for a limited pathogen panel while its identity remains uncertain.

  • Assign an intake ID before unpacking. Record source and transport conditions, photograph condition, inspect under magnification, isolate material, use dedicated tools, and release only through a documented decision.
