Core science

Root emergence does not mean the cutting can immediately support full production demand. New roots may be small, poorly distributed, or only loosely connected to the medium, while leaves remain adapted to high humidity and low airflow.

Hardening reduces protection in steps. Humidity, airflow, light, irrigation frequency, and root-zone conditions are adjusted while the plant’s turgor, leaf temperature, water use, and new growth are observed.

Rapid wilt after dome removal can reflect insufficient roots, root damage, excessive light, high VPD, cold or saline media, poor plug contact, or a sudden environmental jump. Reclosing the dome may restore turgor without correcting the cause.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Use staged venting and environmental transitions. Transplant only when roots hold the plug or otherwise meet a defined functional criterion, and protect the first production interval from extreme demand.
