Terms to know

rooting percentage
The proportion of started cuttings that meet a defined rooted criterion at a stated observation time.
time to root
Elapsed time from propagation start to a defined root-emergence or root-readiness endpoint.
root quality
A predefined assessment of root amount, distribution, condition, and functional readiness rather than presence alone.
survival
The proportion of propagated plants remaining alive and meeting a stated viability criterion at a defined time.
uniformity
The degree to which individuals in a batch cluster around the same measured developmental or performance state.
censoring
A data condition in which the exact event time is not observed for every individual, such as cuttings that have not rooted by the final observation.
failure category
A predefined classification used to group failed or rejected propagules by observable pattern or diagnostic stage.

Core science

Rooting percentage alone can hide slow, weak, or highly variable batches. A complete assessment includes time to root, root number, length or mass, distribution, callus, shoot condition, transplant survival, and later uniformity.

Failure can occur before root initiation, during emergence, or after transplant. Basal rot, desiccation, heavy callus, delayed rooting, weak roots, sudden post-dome wilt, and uneven tray patterns point to different hypotheses.

Tray position and donor identity must be retained. Averages can conceal edge drying, light gradients, blocked irrigation, one contaminated mother, or an operator effect.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • Define acceptance criteria before the batch begins. Photograph representative successes and failures, retain rejects long enough for diagnosis when safe, and compare changes against a current standard.
