- Removal of soil, debris, and organic matter from a surface before a disinfection step when required.

Core science
Cutting tools contact sap and wounded tissue, creating a direct pathway between plants. Shared hands, gloves, trays, labels, water, benches, and transport containers can also move contamination.
Cleaning removes dirt and organic matter from surfaces. Disinfection uses an antimicrobial product according to its current label, including required use conditions and contact time. These are separate steps, and a quick wipe does not by itself establish disinfection.
Hop latent viroid can spread through propagation networks and mechanical practices. Containment therefore depends on donor status, workflow direction, tool control, batch segregation, testing, and traceable corrective action.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Use a written clean-to-dirty sequence. Separate incoming, quarantine, mother, propagation, and released stock. Replace or reprocess tools and gloves according to the validated program, and stop work when contamination control is lost.
