Terms to know
- PPFD
- Photosynthetic photon flux density arriving at a surface, expressed as micromoles per square metre per second.
- DLI
- Daily light integral: accumulated photosynthetic photons per square metre per day, expressed as mol m-2 d-1.
- photoperiod
- The duration and timing of light and dark intervals within a 24-hour cycle.
- photomorphogenesis
- Growth and developmental responses controlled by light signals rather than by photosynthetic carbon fixation alone.
- leaf temperature
- The actual temperature of leaf tissue or surface, which can differ from surrounding air temperature.
- light acclimation
- Physiological and structural adjustment to a changed light environment over time.
Core science
Light supplies energy for photosynthesis and signals development, but an unrooted cutting has restricted hydraulic capacity. Excess photon load or radiant heat can raise leaf temperature and water demand faster than the cutting can replace water.
Very low light can preserve water while limiting carbohydrate supply and delaying functional growth. The useful range depends on donor reserves, leaf area, temperature, humidity, spectrum, genotype, and progression of rooting.
Cannabis propagation studies use different fixtures and conditions, and donor-light treatments can change mother architecture and cutting performance. A fixture label does not define the cutting’s actual exposure.
Why this matters in cultivation
- Map PPFD across the tray and record photoperiod, DLI, spectrum, fixture distance, leaf temperature, and rooting stage. Increase light only after roots and water regulation are demonstrated.
Measure and record
Controlled record set

Evidence limits
Cannabis-specific optimum-light evidence is limited and protocol-dependent. Do not publish one universal PPFD target.
