Core science

PPF describes total photon output from a source; PPFD describes spatial density at a receiving surface. A high-PPF fixture can still produce poor canopy PPFD if mounted too high, aimed badly, blocked, used without suitable overlap, or placed in a reflective geometry different from its test condition.

Photon efficacy is an equipment conversion metric, not crop productivity. It does not include fixture placement, room interception, spectrum-dependent response, canopy architecture, photoperiod, dimming losses, heat-removal energy, or yield quality. Wall-plug power must be measured under the actual operating state when energy calculations matter.

A fixture specification is only comparable when test method, input voltage, thermal state, spectrum, dimming level, and measurement uncertainty are known. Crop design must use a measured canopy map after installation; manufacturer PPF and distribution files are inputs to design, not proof of delivered photons.

Why this matters in cultivation

  • PPF and efficacy help screen equipment, whereas PPFD maps and DLI verify crop exposure. Keeping these roles separate prevents purchasing metrics from becoming unsupported crop targets.
  • A useful lighting audit follows energy from electrical input to fixture photon output, then to canopy distribution, intercepted photons, plant response, and saleable output.

Fixture identity

Model, spectrum, rated and measured power, input voltage, age, cleaning state, and dimming setting.

Output basis

PPF or ePPF band, laboratory method, test temperature, uncertainty, and date.

Installed geometry

Fixture count, spacing, height, tilt, overlap, reflective boundaries, and obstructions.

Canopy delivery

Mean, minimum, maximum, distribution, and measurement grid for PPFD or ePPFD.

Performance

Kilowatt-hours, crop area, photoperiod, intercepted-light proxy, biomass, quality, and rejected product.

Common misconceptions

Claim: More PPF guarantees more crop light
Correction: Room geometry and interception determine how much output reaches useful plant surfaces.
Claim: Micromoles per joule predicts yield
Correction: It describes photon conversion at the fixture, not biological or economic conversion by the crop system.
Claim: Rated wattage equals draw
Correction: Actual electrical input can change with voltage, dimming, drivers, temperature, and measurement method.

Evidence limits

Fixture test reports may use different laboratories, bands, tolerances, and thermal conditions. Independent installed measurements are required before comparing crop delivery or energy performance.
